Bethany Beyond the Jordan – The Baptism Site of Jesus

On the eastern banks of the Jordan River lies Al‑Maghtas, known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan. This site is widely recognized as the location where John the Baptist baptized Jesus Christ (John 1:26–28). Since the early centuries of Christianity, pilgrims have come here to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and John.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered ancient churches, baptismal pools, and even Elijah’s Hill, associated with the Prophet Elijah’s miraculous ascension. Byzantine-era monasteries and chapels tell the story of a community built around faith and pilgrimage.

In 2015, Bethany Beyond the Jordan was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its immense cultural and religious significance. In recent years, the site has become a thriving pilgrimage center. In 2023 alone, over 212,000 visitors came to experience its serenity and history—a record-breaking year.

Jordan has also announced a $100 million master plan to enhance the area while preserving its sacred atmosphere. Plans include a biblical village, interfaith center, sustainable agriculture, and spiritual retreat accommodations, ensuring the site continues to welcome visitors from all walks of life. In early 2025, the inauguration of a new Church of the Baptismmarked a milestone in Jordan’s ongoing efforts to strengthen interfaith harmony.

Visitors often describe Bethany Beyond the Jordan as a place of quiet power and reflection, where scripture and landscape come together in a truly moving way.

Mount Nebo – Where Moses Saw the Promised Land

Rising above the Jordan Valley, Mount Nebo is revered as the place where Moses stood to view the Promised Land after leading the Israelites through the desert (Deuteronomy 34). Though he never entered the land, the view from Nebo’s summit—stretching over the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and even Jerusalem on a clear day—is breathtaking.

The mountain became a key pilgrimage destination in the early centuries of Christianity, marked by a Byzantine church and monastery. The Memorial Church of Moses houses some of the region’s most intricate mosaics, depicting pastoral life and biblical imagery.

Archaeological discoveries continue to shed light on Nebo’s history, including a 5th-century burial shrine built by monks to honor Moses and a traditional clay tannur oven used to bake bread for ancient pilgrims. After a decade-long restoration, the Moses Memorial reopened in 2016, inviting travelers once again to witness its spiritual and cultural treasures.

Why These Sites Matter Today

Bethany Beyond the Jordan and Mount Nebo are more than historical landmarks—they are living places of faith and cultural exchange. Bethany represents the spiritual origins of baptism and reconciliation, while Mount Nebo reflects a story of hope, vision, and fulfillment.
